Surf Shop History

Surf Specialties Corp was established in 1985 by James Fulbright. With starting capital of $1000.00 and ten used boards, I began as a ding repair and used board business operating out of my garage. Since my building was properly zoned (neighborhood services), I was able to legally operate out of my garage with virtually no-overhead (ceiling clearance was only 6’6" !! Get it..? No overhead!! Ha-ha!!).

More About Strictly Hardcore Surf

An interview with Strictly Hardcore Surf

When did you start your business?

1985

Do you consider the location of your shop a key factor to the business’s success?

Nope. We have established our name by being the only shop in town that makes custom shaped surfboards. We also have a shaping bay window in the shop where you can watch your board get shaped.

Who is your average buyer?

All ages and both genders that are core surfers that do not shop at the mall.

If a total Barney walks in do you treat him with the same respect as a full on loc?

Yes. We always treat our customer’s equally.

What is the dumbest question a customer has ever asked?

No question is a stupid question.

Do you have a mascot (ex. - An animal that roams freely throughout the building)?

We have a shop dog, 2 shop cats and a shaper.

What is the craziest return a customer has ever tried to make?

Customer’s have tried to return sandals that have been worn for 6 months. Also customer’s that have tried to return surfboards because they got pressure dings in them.

Does your store support any local surfers or have a surf team?

Not at this time. Lately it's been difficult to find riders that understand that sponsorship is a 2-way street.

What is your most annoying grom story?

The most annoying grom story I can’t really print. One of the annoying ones is all of the groms that believe everything new that comes out in the mags.

Have you ever had any type of celeb roll in and make a purchase?

So many. My husband is a celebrity. Jimmy Buffet, Brandon Backe, Michael Hynson, Robert August, Dana Brown, Stacy Peralta, Rell Sunn, Brian Keaulana, Archie Kalepa, Daize Shayne, Belen Connelley and others.

Have you ever pulled a hot chick/guy solely due to the fact that you own/manage a surf shop?

The hot guy who owns this shop pulled me.

How many days a week do you surf now compared to before you owned/managed a surf shop?

We surf as much as we can. James surfs or stand up paddles almost daily.

Who is your favorite surfer and why?

Tom Curren opps I mean James Fulbright- Because he’s beautiful to watch.

Has a customer trying on clothes ever walked out completely naked?

No, but I have had some walk out in swimwear where I wish they didn’t.

Has a person ever walked in totally blitzkrieged (really intoxicated) and tried to make a purchase? If so elaborate.

Yes. Many times. One time I had 6 kids come in super drunk, carrying their drinks around swapping the price tags on product. They ended up ripping me off so I went down the street and caught them standing by their car. I called the cops on them and they were arrested.

Every store has to deal with shoplifting. What is your most memorable experience and what is your shoplifting policy?

Our shoplifting policy is if I catch you shoplifting, regardless of what you steal I will call the cops and I will press charges. I have had numerous groups of teenage girls shoplift from me where I lock them in the shop and have them sit on the floor crying their eyes out until the cops come and arrest them.

And last but not least tell us one of the craziest shop stories you can remember?

One time to lesbians came in and helped each other try on clothes but they didn't use the dressing room. It was entertaining.
