Surf Shop History
In 1989 we started our surf shop in the front living room and bedroom of our house. It complimented making custom surfboards. Like one hand washing the other. Over the years it expanded and we moved into a free standing shop in 1995, which is right beside the original location. Rodanthe Surf Shop is solely owned and operated by native North Carolinians.

More About Rodanthe Surf Shop
An interview with Rodanthe Surf Shop
When did you start your business?
1989
Do you consider the location of your shop a key factor to the business’s success?
Yes absolutely. We’re located right here at the main area where the waves fire. Right by “S-Curves.”
Who is your average buyer?
It is really diverse actually. We have great local support from the three villages and a lot of tourists. Ever since the movie “Nights in Rodanthe” came out we have had a lot of tourists requests Rodanthe t-shirts.
If a total Barney walks in do you treat him with the same respect as a full on loc?
Yes totally. We treat everybody equally.
What is the dumbest question a customer has ever asked?
“Where is the ocean?” People spend an entire week here sometimes and think the Sound is the ocean the entire time when in all reality the ocean is on the other side.
Do you have a mascot (ex. - An animal that roams freely throughout the building)?
Yes we do- Cody the pup. And a bunch of kitties.
What is the craziest return a customer has ever tried to make?
Somebody bought a pair of wetsuit booties. They wore them all day and said that they wanted to return them because they already own booties, but they forgot them at home.
Does your store support any local surfers or have a surf team?
Yes. Our community surfers.
What is your most annoying grom story?
None that we can think of actually. There aren’t any annoying stories that stand out actually.
Have you ever had any type of celeb roll in and make a purchase?
Lots of pro surfers actually. All of the badminton boys- Tom Curren, Kelly Slater,Lisa Anderson, Ken Bradshaw, Greg Arnette, Charlie Kuhn. We used to always have a badminton session in between surf sessions.
Have you ever pulled a hot chick/guy solely due to the fact that you own/manage a surf shop?
Nope. We just go surfing.
How many days a week do you surf now compared to before you owned/managed a surf shop?
Maybe a little less, but we still go out every morning and every evening.
Who is your favorite surfer and why?
The guy in the tube.
Has a customer trying on clothes ever walked out completely naked?
They just drop their droors in here and try on clothes at times.
Has a person ever walked in totally blitzkrieged (really intoxicated) and tried to make a purchase? If so elaborate.
Ohhh yes we’ve had this before.
Every store has to deal with shoplifting. What is your most memorable experience and what is your shoplifting policy?
A drunk lady came in one time from the bar across the street and stole a bikini. I closed the shop and went across the street and retrieved the bikini right out of her purse. I waived it around in the bar and said “look ya’ll have a thief in here.” The funny thing is she stayed in the bar and continued to drink.
