Surf Shop History

My wife and I were fortunate enough to know that we liked working together. We worked together in the surf industry for many years before we opened “Locals.” When we finally found the right time we both opened “Locals” surf shop that has been going strong for 3 years now. Our surf shop and surfing is a total way of life for us. All encompassing.

More About Locals Surf Shop

An interview with Locals Surf Shop

When did you start your business?

August 2006

Do you consider the location of your shop a key factor to the business’s success?

Yes absolutely because we’re the closest shop to the beach. You can walk to the beach from our shop.

Who is your average buyer?

Everybody from ages 8-80, but most of our business is from our core local crew.

If a total Barney walks in do you treat him with the same respect as a full on loc?

Yes absolutely. Everybody gets our utmost respect until they’ve lost it.

What is the dumbest question a customer has ever asked?

We had some Scottish guys come in once and rent a board for an entire week and when they returned the board only the bottom of the board was waxed and they said “fu@% why is this board so hard to get up on???” (the top was completely stripped of wax).

Do you have a mascot (ex. - An animal that roams freely throughout the building)?

Nope.

What is the craziest return a customer has ever tried to make?

Honestly nobody has tried to take real advantage of us and try to return something that was used etc.

Does your store support any local surfers or have a surf team?

We have a full grom surf & skate team and we have one pro rider Jensen Callaway.

What is your most annoying grom story?

Too many to list.

Have you ever had any type of celeb roll in and make a purchase?

Greg Norman jr buys his boards here. He has bought a couple of DHD’s from us. My buddy Brendan Witt (Pro NHL player) comes in every once in a while.

Have you ever pulled a hot chick/guy solely due to the fact that you own/manage a surf shop?

My wife is super beautiful and we own the shop together.

How many days a week do you surf now compared to before you owned/managed a surf shop?

I surf a lot more nowadays , but for less periods of time.

Who is your favorite surfer and why?

All the pro surfers in the world, but my local buddy Justice St. John works his ass off to be able to surf all over the world. I respect him highly due to the fact that he does just for the love of the love and passion of surfing.

Has a customer trying on clothes ever walked out completely naked?

Nope.

Has a person ever walked in totally blitzkrieged (really intoxicated) and tried to make a purchase? If so elaborate.

Yes absolutely. Probably the gnarliest one is a chick was pissed off at her husband she came in all wasted and spent around $1,200 and when her husband found out he tried to deny the charges I had to fight with Amex for months to get my money for the charge she made.

Every store has to deal with shoplifting. What is your most memorable experience and what is your shoplifting policy?

Probably the first time I caught a guy stealing in here (Xmas 06). He kept asking to use the phone saying that somebody was going to pick him up. He hung around for like an hour flirting with the girl up front. I had a feeling he was up to something so watched him like a hawk. I finally saw him snake a tee and put it under his shirt. I grabbed the tee that he snaked from under his shirt and whacked him with it. He seriously started to cry saying “you’ll never see me again. You’ll never see me again.” The guy was an adult man too. I try and let the kids know that I didn’t start this shop in the 80s and made tons of cash as the industry grew, but rather we started this shop much later with the grass roots of surf knowledge and that we’re providing the surf community with a good shop where our team knows a lot about surfing and is here to help support the surfing lifestyle. When a kid steals I do talk to his parents as well.

And last but not least tell us one of the craziest shop stories you can remember?

I’ll put it this way- We definitely have a lot of good parties.
