Surf Shop History

The first Infinity Surfboard was shaped in 1970. It is a 7' balsa single fin with #1 proudly printed on the tail. It has never been ridden but hangs as a memorial on the wall. Since that time, more than 30,000 surfboards have been carefully created. They on the other hand, have taken the drop and drawn every possible line that perhaps 35,000 or more riders could think of.

More About Infinity Surfboards

An interview with Infinity Surfboards

When did you start your business?

1970

Do you consider the location of your shop a key factor to the business’s success?

Yes. Dana Point is a nice centralized location between HB and Trestles so we get customers from all of Orange County walking through our doors.

Who is your average buyer?

We are all about surfboards and we sell a ton of ‘em. Our customer is the core surfer of all ages.

If a total Barney walks in do you treat him with the same respect as a full on loc?

Every customer we treat like family, they are why we are here and we are honored they chose to shop with us over the many options a surfer has these days.

What is the dumbest question a customer has ever asked?

We get dudes coming out of the dressing room with wetsuits on backwards all the time and an all time fave is when we answer the phone “hello, Infinity Surfboards” and the customer on the line replies “umm ya uh is this infinity?”

Do you have a mascot (ex. - An animal that roams freely throughout the building)?

No mascot but we do have a house band that jams here after hours. Love it.

What is the craziest return a customer has ever tried to make?

We’ve had a guy break a surfboard the very first session after he bought it. We ask if he surfed gravels and if it was low tide? Yep.Does your store support any local surfers or have a surf team?

We sponsor a handful of surfers, musicians, artists and friends. Collectively they are the roots of our brand. It’s more than a team, it’s a family tree, our “Infintree”

What is your most annoying grom story?

Groms will always be groms but we dig having them around, you need the local shop to be a place where you can hang your hat.

Have you ever had any type of celeb roll in and make a purchase?

We are always amazed on how many celebs come get surfboards. We are not that close to L.A. and there are some great retailers up there. We just custom shaped some SUP’s for John Travolta and his wife. Pretty Exciting that’s John Freaking Travolta!!

Have you ever pulled a hot chick/guy solely due to the fact that you own/manage a surf shop?

When I was in highschool it was so easy!

How many days a week do you surf now compared to before you owned/managed a surf shop?

When the waves are good I surf!

Who is your favorite surfer and why?

Rob Machado, goofy foots rule.

Has a customer trying on clothes ever walked out completely naked?

Nah but we had some groms put fullsuits on under their baggy clothes. It was in the summer too so they were super sweaty and roasting. We caught them and made them lay in the baking summer sun in the middle of our parking lot until the cops came. Classic stuff!

Has a person ever walked in totally blitzkrieged (really intoxicated) and tried to make a purchase? If so elaborate.

Ya we get the random bum, druggy, drunk roll in and tell us how he used to surf and all that.

Every store has to deal with shoplifting. What is your most memorable experience and what is your shoplifting policy?

Shoplifters are so easy to spot and they always try to pull the same trick. One dude tries to take all of your attention talking to you while the other grabs the goods. We did have a girlfriend park in front of the shops front door and a guy walked in went straight to the surfboard rack grabbed 2 boards and walked out the door. Jumped in the back of the truck like the dukes of hazard and bolted off. We followed him in my truck and caught up to them at the light. I wrote their license plate on a piece of paper with a marker all big and pulled up to them at the light and just showed it to them. The looks on their faces were classic! 15 mins later the cops brought the boards back.
