More About Freedom Surf Shop
An interview with Freedom Surf Shop
When did you start your business?
2004
Do you consider the location of your shop a key factor to the business’s success?
It’s actually more that we’re off the beaten path and not in the tourist area. We’re in a “core zone,” but on a main road in town.
Who is your average buyer?
Core surfers are our average customer pretty much, but we do get some tourists.
If a total Barney walks in do you treat him with the same respect as a full on loc?
Yes absolutely. We try and educate them.
What is the dumbest question a customer has ever asked?
There’s so many actually. A lot of questions like “why do you wax the top of the board?”
Do you have a mascot (ex. - An animal that roams freely throughout the building)?
Yes we do- Pete Smith.
What is the craziest return a customer has ever tried to make?
A kid came in and spent like 1600 bucks on his mom’s credit card. She was in the Philippines and left her son with her credit card and Audi. She got upset that he spent so much money so tried to have him return all of it.
Does your store support any local surfers or have a surf team?
Yes we have a surf team- both longboarders and shorboarders.
What is your most annoying grom story?
When our groms come in I usually go in the back and hide.
Have you ever had any type of celeb roll in and make a purchase?
My wife took Alex Knost thrift store shopping once. The Paskowitz’s come in all of the time, a lot of pro surfers. Dave went stand up paddle boarding with Eddie Vedder once. Will Smith came in and bought a paddleboard once.
Have you ever pulled a hot chick/guy solely due to the fact that you own/manage a surf shop?
I’m married and Sam has always had a girl. We do get hit on by a lot of ladies actually.
