Surf Shop History
I’ve (Blair Rhodes) been in the surf industry for 40 years. My brother and I decided to open up a surf shop since we have a huge passion for surfing and love the lifestyle.

More About Chauncey's Surf Shop
An interview with Chauncey's Surf Shop
When did you start your business?
1994. The second store opened in 1999.
Do you consider the location of your shop a key factor to the business’s success?
Pretty key. Considering the fact that both of our stores are fairly centered in midtown it helps bring the people from the north of town as well as the walking traffic.
Who is your average buyer?
We sell from 12 year old kids just starting out to 65 year old guys that have surfed their entire life.
If a total Barney walks in do you treat him with the same respect as a full on loc?
Yes absolutely. We do not discriminate whatsoever.
What is the dumbest question a customer has ever asked?
There’s so many. Too many to even list.
Do you have a mascot (ex. - An animal that roams freely throughout the building)?
Nope.
What is the craziest return a customer has ever tried to make?
Completely worn out clothes that were ripped to shreds and bleached out that customers have tried to return.
Does your store support any local surfers or have a surf team?
We support some local surfers.
What is your most annoying grom story?
No not really. Nothing in particular.
Have you ever had any type of celeb roll in and make a purchase?
Lots of pro surfers and skate pros.
Have you ever pulled a hot chick/guy solely due to the fact that you own/manage a surf shop?
How many days a week do you surf now compared to before you owned/managed a surf shop?
We still manage to get out a fair amount in the mornings and evenings.
Who is your favorite surfer and why?
Mick Fanning. Because he gets out there and charges and just doesn’t care.
Has a customer trying on clothes ever walked out completely naked?
Almost naked. An old lady in her underwear once.
Has a person ever walked in totally blitzkrieged (really intoxicated) and tried to make a purchase? If so elaborate.
All of the time. On a daily basis. We have a bar right behind us. Too many stories to remember.
Every store has to deal with shoplifting. What is your most memorable experience and what is your shoplifting policy?
A woman I stopped last year. I caught her with a bunch of bathing suits, tee shirts and shorts. We held her here until the police were on their way. In the meantime she called 911 and said that she was being kidnapped. She kept saying that she was going to sue all of us. Our shoplifting policy is that we call the police.
And last but not least tell us one of the craziest shop stories you can remember?
Probably when Blair jumped in the window of a guys Hummer after he stole some shorts. The guy tried to take off with Blair hanging out of the window. Blair finally got out of the car and called the police who finally caught the guy.
