Surf Shop History
Becker first opened up in Hermosa Beach, in sunny California in 1974, and they've been hooked on bringing the public great boards, threads, and gear ever since. Since then, Phil Becker, its namesake, has shaped more boards than anyone in the history of shaping, over 100,000!! Over the years they've added 5 retail locations up and down Southern California and in 1998 their cyber doors opened to share the stoke with folks near and far.

More About Becker Surf and Sport
An interview with Becker Surf and Sport
When did you start your business?
1980
Do you consider the location of your shop a key factor to the business’s success?
Absolutely. Must have great parking
Who is your average buyer?
Very well rounded, from a hot grom to a mom shopping for her SUP crazed husband.
If a total Barney walks in do you treat him with the same respect as a full on loc?
Always, we pride ourselves on that.
What is the dumbest question a customer has ever asked?
Do you have tennis balls (it does say Surf and “Sport” on the building
Do you have a mascot (ex. - An animal that roams freely throughout the building)?
Nope.
What is the craziest return a customer has ever tried to make?
The buckled board is always a good one.
Does your store support any local surfers or have a surf team?
Yes, but we have had to cut back this year.
What is your most annoying grom story?
Any of them that think they are good, and because of that you owe them the world.
Have you ever had any type of celeb roll in and make a purchase?
Happens every day in our Malibu shop
Have you ever pulled a hot chick/guy solely due to the fact that you own/manage a surf shop?
Can't go there...
How many days a week do you surf now compared to before you owned/managed a surf shop?
Surfed a bunch more before the stores. But, that is part of getting older and having your life a tad more complicated.
Who is your favorite surfer and why?
Tom Carrol. Style and power.
Has a customer trying on clothes ever walked out completely naked?
Nope.
Has a person ever walked in totally blitzkrieged (really intoxicated) and tried to make a purchase? If so elaborate.
Oh, we have had a few of those. Just about when you are going to throw them out they pull out 500 for a new board. The crazies are more of a story. We are sure it has to do with a full moon. There is always a full moon when you get a luny in the sstore.
Every store has to deal with shoplifting. What is your most memorable experience and what is your shoplifting policy?
The best stories were way back when before our attorney said we could not hurt them. We hurt some guys pretty good back then. Our old crew from the 80’s loved to scuffle.
And last but not least tell us one of the craziest shop stories you can remember?
The transvestite that came in full drag and wanted to try on a wetsuit. How do you address whether or not he/she would like to try on a mens or womens suit? That was a fun one.
